The boxy cloak

The boxy cloak

The boxy cloak was a formal garment worn by the aristocrats. It was mainly made of silk or damask in brilliant colors and decorated with lots of gems and embroidery. The cape-like cloak, often purple in Roman times and worn by emperors and officers, was square and knee-length in Byzantine times. In the portraits of the Emperor Justinian and the Empress Theodora, the character of the large square cloak is clearly depicted: the garment is made of purple material with a different color lining, and on the left and right side, front and back, there are decorations called tabriens, which are a characteristic symbol of nobility in the Byzantine Empire. The Tabrian pattern on the emperor's great square cloak was of birds embroidered with red circles on a gold background. The queen's great square cloak was decorated with gold thread and under the collar with precious stones. Outerwear is a white Dalmatian robe with gold and emeralds on the front and cuffs. The whole garment, from material to color and decoration, reflects extreme elegance and luxury. Compared with the simplicity of ancient Greece and ancient Rome, it more reflects the strong Oriental decorative characteristics of Byzantine Empire.
